The 39 Steps - Auditions

  • May 29-30, 2019, 7:00 PM

Your Theatre, Inc. is holding auditions Wednesday, May 29 at 7pm and Thursday, May 30 at 7pm, for all roles in the upcoming 2019-2020 Season production of The 39 Steps by John Buchan and adapted by Patrick Barlow. The performances run from Sep 12 to Sep 22, 2019.

Auditions are held in the playhouse located in St. Martin's Church/Hall complex, 136 Rivet Street at Country Street, in New Bedford. The auditions are open to all actors over the age of 16. There is an Audition Package available for download.

Auditions will consist of a cold reading from the script and a prepared monologue (see the web site for download). Various accents are a plus. Director Lawrence R. Houbre, Jr. is casting all roles.

Richard Hannay: (Age early 30's to late 40's) Pencil mustache. An attractive man, not too young and not too old. Relatively ordinary, thinks of himself as commonplace, is drawn in against his best judgment into a mystery he vaguely understands.

Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret: (Age 25 to 40's) All roles played by one woman: a beautiful, nervous, seductive German spy; a Scottish farmer's wife; and a beautiful British woman. The role requires versatility, stamina, excellent comic timing, and the romantic style of a Hitchcock leading lady.

Clown 1 and 2: (Age Range: 20 and up) The Clowns, in the English Music Hall tradition, play over 30 characters between them; changing characters frequently, sometimes within seconds, using costumes and props from the simple to more detailed. The roles require versatility, stamina to perform fast-paced verbal and physical comedy; excellent comic timing and extreme focus.

Play summary: Bored Canadian Richard Hannay, on holiday in London, meets a mysterious woman who says she's a spy. When she is murdered in his flat and he is accused, Hannay sets out to uncover the meaning of the "39 Steps," a secret she spoke of with her dying breath. Hannay, unsure of whom he can trust, crisscrosses England and Scotland on a thrilling adventure involving "train chases, plane crashes, shadowy murders, beautiful spies, trilbied heavies, dastardly villains" and of course love, as he races against time to save England and the world.
