Gingerbread Lady - Auditions

  • Jul 22-23, 2019, 7:00 PM

Your Theatre, Inc. is holding auditions July 22 and 23 (Mon and Tue) at 7pm for all roles in the upcoming 2019-2020 Season production of The Gingerbread Lady by Neil Simon. The performances run from January 9 to January 19, 2020.

Director Eric R. Paradis is casting all roles. Auditions consist of cold readings from the script, and are held in the playhouse located in St. Martin's Church/Hall complex, 136 Rivet Street at Country Street, in New Bedford. The auditions are open to all actors over the age of 16.

Evy Meara: Female, 40-60 yrs old. Charming but edgy, with a quick biting wit. Willing to not only poke fun at herself, but those around her. She's vulnerable at times, as she is dealing with personal issues, alcoholism and a newly re-nested college age child, a pair of self centered friends and a boyfriend that has done more harm than good. Despite all this, Evy lights up the stage with her commentary and attempts at control. This will require an energetic performance relying on comic timing and ability to range emotions.

Polly Meara: Female, 18-30. Well put together yet innocent daughter of protagonist who "plays the adult" in the family as best she can. You can see that she is her mother's daughter with her (less frequent) darkly funny jabs and does her best to keep mom in check as she somewhat reluctantly comes back home to help mom by living with her. This will require not only a soft touch but the ability to help the audience sympathize with her family issues.

Jimmy Perry: Male, 25-45. Funny, but an actor who's career has seen better days and seems to be winding down. Despite his humor, his decline shows. Does his best to put his sexuality and career on hold until his good friend Evy seems better. This will require a quick wit with good physicality to suit the humorous dialog he engages in.

Toby Landau: Female, 40-60. Self absorbed glamour pot that is a staple on the NYC "scene". She loves her self, her looks, her men, her status, and her friend long as it doesn't hurt her hair or her shoes. This will require strong comedic timing and a dry sense of humor and delivery; also an actor able show how vulnerable she really is, as well.

Lou Tanner: Male, 30-45. Ex boyfriend of Evy. Musician who's lack of success doesn't seem to quell his thirst for women. Abusive and conniving, he helped Evy down her steep spiral to trouble.

Manuel: Male, 15-40. Young delivery person, this will require the ability to tastefully deliver an "ethnic" character and show us a flirty side.

In the wake of Neil Simon's passing in 2018, what better way to celebrate his work than to stage one of his most uncommon gems, a dark comedy that finds the humor in life's biggest challenges. In The Gingerbread Lady we follow Evy, who has experienced her fair share of challenges, including a recent rehab stint, and yet manages to take us on a ride of humorous proportions! Weaving through fast-paced scenes of the 1960's New York social scene, she must navigate her daughter's straight-laced leanings, her best friend's struggles with vanity, the desperation of a washed up actor friend, and her ex-lover who throws yet more fuel to the fire. The tragic and touching ending will keep you laughing through life's curveballs.
