NEW BEDFORD --- Director Lawrence R. Houbre, Jr. will audition actors for Neil Simon's hilarious comedy "Brighton Beach Memoirs" on Wednesday and Thursday, June 6 and 7, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.
Tryouts for three male and four female roles will be held in the handicap accessible Your Theatre, Inc. Performance Complex at St. Martin's Church, 136 Rivet St. at County St., New Bedford. Parking is free in the church lot on County St.
Acting experience is not necessary, but role seekers should have a desire to share the experience of live theatre and the enjoyment of collaborating with other talented individuals.
Characters in the play are Eugene Morris Jerome, a 15-year-old Polish-Jewish teenager obsessed with baseball and the unfolding mysteries of girls and sex; Kate, 40, his strong Jewish matriarch mother; Jack, 40, his father; and Stanley, 18, his older brother.
Other characters include Blanche Morton, 38, Eugene's widowed aunt; Laurie Morton, 13, his bookish cousin; and Nora Morton, 16, his attractive older cousin.
While experiencing puberty, Eugene searches for identity as he tries to deal with a financially stressed family whose bonds are intense and unbreakable, yet crinkled by the wrinkles of real life.
One New York critic said that what propels the play are the virtues and failings of its very real characters and the hilarious collision of love, anxiety and frustration that underlines their interaction.
"Brighton Beach Memoirs" will run Thursdays through Saturday evenings September 13-15 and 20-22 at 8 p.m. with Sunday matinees September 16 and 23 at 2:30 p.m.
It will be the first of Your Theatre Inc.'s five major productions in its 2012-2013 66th season of providing award-winning community theatre to Southeastern Massachusetts and surrounding communities.
