Seven actors --- five of whom will be making their first appearance on the Your Theatre, Inc. stage --- have been chosen to perform in Neil Simon's hilarious comedy "Brighton Beach Memoirs".
Directed by Lawrence R. Houbre Jr., Benjamin Wilkie of Little Compton, RI will play Eugene Morris Jerome, the teenager obsessed with baseball and the unfolding mysteries of girls and sex.
Laurie Arruda of Tiverton, RI will play Kate, Eugene's mother, while Tony Oliva of Fairhaven, a YTI repeat performer, will be seen as Jack, his father. Dartmouth's Zane Furtado will play Stanley, Eugene's older brother.
Other actors include veteran Your Theatre performer Carol Oliva of Fairhaven as Blanche Morton, Eugene's widowed aunt; Anabel Costa of Dartmouth as Laurie, his bookish cousin; and Cassie Poirier of New Bedford as Nora, his attractive older cousin.
David Pelletier of Fairhaven will be Mr. Houbre's stage manager.
While experiencing puberty, Eugene searches for identity as he tries to deal with a financially stressed family whose bonds are intense and unbreakable, yet crinkled by the wrinkles of real life.
One New York critic said that what propels the play are the virtues and failings of its very real characters and the hilarious collision of love, anxiety and frustration that underlines their interaction.
"Brighton Beach Memoirs" will run Thursdays through Saturday evenings September 13-15 and 20-22 at 8 p.m. with Sunday matinees September 16 and 23 at 2:30 p.m.
All performances will be held in the handicap-accessible Your Theatre, Inc. Complex at St. Martin's Church, 136 Rivet St. at County St., New Bedford. Parking is free in the church lot on County St.
The play will be the first of Your Theatre Inc.'s five major productions in its 2012-2013 66th season of providing award-winning community theatre to Southeastern Massachusetts and surrounding communities with corporate sponsorship from Bridgewater Credit Union.
