NEW BEDFORD -- Nine South Coast actors -- two of whom will be making their debut appearance on the Your Theatre, Inc. stage -- have been chosen to perform in the 67th season opener, Neil Simon’s hilarious Biloxi Blues, a play about the antics of a group of army recruits.
Directed by Lawrence R. Houbre Jr., Zane Furtado of Dartmouth will play Eugene Morris Jerome,a 20-year-old, from Brooklyn, who is drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II.
Chris McRae of Fall River will play Sgt. Merwin J. Toomey, while Will Berthaud, Jr. and Chris McIntyre of New Bedford, David Martin of Dartmouth, David O’Connell of Middletown, RI and Joel Ward of Fall River will fill the roles of Eugene’s fellow recruits.
Other actors include Suzanne Bergeron and Cassie Poirier, both of New Bedford, who will portray the two romantic interests in the play.
Nancy Sparklin of Rochester will be Mr. Houbre’s stage manager.
The comedy is about the struggles of Eugene and his fellow recruits to survive the rigors of basic training at an Army boot camp.
The second in what is known as Simon’s Eugene trilogy, the play follows Brighton Beach Memoirs, which Your Theatre successfully produced last season, and precedes Broadway Bound on tap for the theatre’s 68th season.
Biloxi Blues will run Thursday through Saturday evenings September 12-14 and 19-21 at 8 p.m. with Sunday matinees September 15 and 22 at 2:30 p.m.
All performances will be held in the handicap-accessible Your Theatre, Inc. Complex at St. Martin’s Church, 136 Rivet St. at County St., New Bedford. Parking is free in the church lot on County St.
The play will be the first of Your Theatre Inc.’s six major productions in its 67th season of providing award-winning community theatre to Southeastern Massachusetts and surrounding communities. Your Theatre is grateful to BankFive for it’s generous sponsorship of this 2013-2014 season.
