NEW BEDFORD, MA -- Playwright Martin McDonagh’s Tony Award-winning work The Beauty Queen of Leenane opens January 18, 2006 for nine performances produced by Your Theatre, Inc.
Directed by Stephen R. Kay of Swansea, the play runs Wednesdays through Saturdays Jan. 18-21 and Jan. 25-28 with a matinee Sunday, Jan. 22.
Curtain time is 8 p.m. for all shows except the 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinee.
Cast members include Lucy Bly and Eric Paradis, both of New Bedford; Kristina Farrell Dahlene of Middleboro, and Robert Duquette of Somerset. Stage Manager is Elena Murphy of Wareham.
The drama-with-comedy, which also won the Lucille Lortel Award for outstanding play, is based on a universal theme because it applies to any place where people are trapped by family or social circumstances.
Ms Bly will play a hypochondriac who constantly seeks attention by having her daughter wait on her. Ms Dahlene will play the daughter who is somewhat bitter about being forced to care for her aging mother while hoping for a chance at romance and escape.
Mr. Duquette will play a man who woos the daughter but finds his marriage proposal thwarted. Mr. Paradis will play the suitor’s news carrying, wise-guy brother.
A New York Times drama critic called the play “stunning” and said “McDonagh has a master’s hand at building and subverting expectations in a cat-and-mouse game with the audience.”
For non-subscribers, ticket prices are $12.00 for Wednesday, Thursday, or Sunday performances, $14.00 for Friday shows, and $15.00 for Saturday performances.
However, a single $2.00 discount for each show is available to any person who presents proof of membership in the American Automobile Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association, New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, or Southcoast Health System’s Employee Advantage Program.
