“When faced with selecting a script, I knew I wanted a story that was current, and that would leave the audience thinking about issues that affect them,” said James Sanguinetti, explaining his choice of Neil LaBute’s The Shape of Things for Your Theatre’s next production, running weekends Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 22. The Shape of Things is Sanguinetti’s first mainstage production for Your Theatre, as the newest staff director for the New Bedford theatre group.
“The Shape of Things explores how outward image helps shape how we act. Despite being written almost 20 years ago, this theme feels even more relevant today, in our era of social media, where people ‘create’ their image on platforms like Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.”
“The amazing cast really brings the story to life,” said Sanguinetti, “and shows how someone can get transformed into the person he desperately wants to be. The Shape of Things then challenges the audience to ask: What’s the cost of this transformation? And is it ultimately worth it?”
“The Shape of Things is a wonderful play, and I hope it encourages people to think of the importance of self-worth and the dangers of focusing solely on outward beauty.”
